Canadian Top Model Theresa Longo Walks the 2015 Mass Exodus Runway for Designer Azalea Yang

By April 9, 2015 Uncategorized No Comments

As the largest student-run fashion event in the world, Mass Exodus 2015 has set the international precedent for innovation in fashion and event production. The production team is comprised of fourth year students in the  School of Fashion’s Fashion Promotion class. The class is split into eight committees who are overseen by an executive committee. Each committee is held accountable to a specific aspect of the show’s creation and promotion, allowing this global phenomenon to occur. Design students spend an entire year creating their collections to be previewed on the MASS EXODUS stage – which in turn sets the stage for a formal introduction to the entire world of Fashion.

1. What inspired you to create these particular designs?

I was inspired by Chinese traditional garment “qipao”, at the first time when I brainstorming for my collection, and then since I wanted to make my clothes more unique so I added modern western silhouette into the designs.

2. Tell me about the rich fabrics you chose for these dresses?

The fabrics I used are mostly 100% silk satin and silk brocade, they are really soft and comfortable in touch. Interestingly, they were carefully selected and purchased from different countries around the world, the turquoise blue and gold silk satin are from the United States, the black satin is from South Korea and the red and gold brocade were imported from China. The appliqués I used on the dresses are designed and made by hand, the threads, shapes and colours are special chose and made for my collection so they are all one of a kind.

2. Describe your career in Fashion up to this moment...
I’m a fashion design student in Ryerson university since 2011, I designed and made a wide range of clothes from women’s wear to men’s wear to children’s wear, as well as fur and contour design. I interned with Michelle who provide accessories for Mac cosmetics and I produced the accessories which were used in a poster. Also, I have interned in the UBA uniform as a marker. Furthermore, I helped with building and managing a pop up shop in my second year as well.
4. How did you prepare for Mass Exodus 2015?
I started to prepare my line for the Mass Exodus from the September of 2014, I first purchased the possible fabrics, and designed 25 designs based on the fabrics that I chose. I selected the best 5 among the designs, after that I started to draft the patterns, and sew the first muslin after I finish the patterns, one by one, it took me one and half month. The last step for the collection itself is sewing the final garments. The entire process took me half a year. After the dresses are finished, I begin finding models, hairdresser, makeup artist, and dealing with a series of small but important tasks that relate to the show. Therefore, designers not only designed the clothes, but also learn and gain lots of experience of how to preparing a fashion show through Mass Exodus.
5. What is next for you Azalea?
I plan to develop 25 more dresses from these five dresses, these dresses will be used to complete my entire line of Azalea Yang, there will be 5 sections, and the names will be based on their colours: red, gold, turquoise blue, beige and black. These dresses would appears in my own boutique hopefully in the summer of the year 2016.

Thank you Azalea Yang!
